SARAH FARTHING
CBC Concert

With classically trained fingers and a voice like burnt brown sugar, this guitarist singer-songwriter has a clutch of songs and a thirst for adventure. Her music matches her propensity for being both earnest and goofy. From the sardonic "Oh Why Did You," to the gentle optimism of "Love Songs," to the jubilant determination of her "Uh Oh (The Elephant Song)," these songs run the gamut of human emotion. Her sound nestles into the sweet spot between folk-rock and pop, with just enough swagger.

With guest: Sam Flynn's passionate, introspective folk songs draw inspiration from influences such as Josh Ritter, Sufjan Stevens and Mumford and Sons.

JOEL FAFARD

Joel Fafard is that rare breed of instrumentalist: the kind whose appeal reaches far beyond the realm of serious guitar enthusiasts. The gifted slide fingerstyle player writes stirring, melodic compositions that paint pictures as vivid as any song with words.

He sings with the sexy, sandpapered-sounding vocal style of the new-generation bluesman. He tells his hilarious between-song stories with the confidence of a late show host delivering his monologue. And when he lets rip a solo on his resonator guitar, it's easy to hear how he earned both a Juno nomination and a Western Canadian Music Award for his skills on the axe. Nominated for Traditional Singer of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards 2011!

WHITEHORSE
(Melissa McClelland & Luke Doucet)

Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet tie the musical knot with their band, Whitehorse, marrying their talent and chemistry on stage as a smoldering duo. Gutsy and resolute in their pursuits of sound and substance, Luke and Melissa's fusion of the personal and professional brings to mind the road-tested romance of Johnny and June.

Individually, Luke and Melissa have been recognized with awards and nominations from the Juno Awards, the Canadian Folk Music Awards, the Hamilton Music Awards, the Independent Music Awards and Polaris. Together, Luke and Melissa create music that cascades forth, rushing like currents fluid and electric. More than the sum of considerable talents, Whitehorse showcases the rarity of true give and take in partnership, uniting falcon with songbird to dramatic effect.

KEVIN MCDONALD COMEDY WRITING WORKSHOP

KEVIN MCDONALD of THE KIDS IN THE HALL will give a two day x seven hour workshop where he will focus on and teach about writing comedy sketches through performing and improvisation. Students will learn how to write comedy through performing and learn how to use improv as a writing tool while even sitting at their laptop.

Improv games will be played to warm-up the actors and also to sharpen their storytelling skills. Groups will do an improvised scene that they will take away and "write", on it's feet. Kevin will guide them with the scenes, then each group will present the sketch.  With this workshop, learn how acting and writing skills, working in unison, can create great scenes and comedy.

POETIC INJUSTICE
Spoken Word Performance with New York based Palestinian Poet REMI KANAZI
Poet, writer, activist, the editor of Poets For Palestine and author of the acclaimed book Poetic Injustice. His political commentary has been featured by news outlets throughout the world.
"Some poetry is meant to make you sit in quiet contemplation. Not so with Remi Kanazi's... his words... with their compassionate anger, their intricate dance of ideas, their unflinching witness, wash over you, dance with you, pick you up, and spur you to action."  Ali Abunimah, One Country: A Bold Proposal to End the Israeli-Palestinian Impasse.

Shane Koyczan and the Short Story Long

The multi-award-winning spoken word performer, Shane Koyczan, and his band the Short Story Long.  Their musical range stretches from folk to funk, from ambient to rock, showcasing all of the beautiful in between.  A band that is always accessible but by turns hilarious, moving and deeply profound... Koyczan's performances have brought audiences to their feet in New York, London, Edinburgh, Sydney, Auckland, and Los Angeles. The Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics introduced us to Shane Koyczan and with a collective "wow" across Canada, we found the poet of our generation. You only have to hear Shane Koyczan once to be hooked--humane, furious, sexy, political, tragic, and so funny you'll be laughing through your tears.
"Listening to 'My Darling Sara' (I left the ignition on, long after I'd parked, to hear the end of that one)… it all sounds like something's coming - a sound everyone asks for." -Gordon Downie of The Tragically Hip
